The venue for the event will now be Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London NW1 2BJ (just opposite Euston Station). Start time is 2pm as before.

The organisers have published a list of people they haven’t yet been able to contact and are invited anyone who may know these people to pass the invitation on.

Peter Tatchell and Sharon Ferguson Challenge Marriage Discimination

In a direct challenge to discrimination in marriage and civil partnerships, Peter Tatchell today announced that 4 same sex couples will apply to marry and 4 straight couples will apply for a civil partnership. When their applications are rejected they will take legal action for discrimination.

"We believe these bans violate the Human Rights Act and are open to challenge in the high court," said Tatchell. The Rev. Sharon Ferguson, of the Lesbian and Gay Christina Movement, who will be the first to lodge an application to marry her partner Franka Strietzel, said, "We have a double system and we shouldn't have. That isn't equality."

The first round of applications will be made on November 4th and will continue till the 14th of December.

After the recent controversy following its apparent indecision on the matter, Stonewall also announced today that it would now be campaigning for marriage equality.

Moscow Pride Bans Ruled Illegal

LGBT Rights campaigners are celebrating throughout Europe today after the European Court of Human Rights ruled the persistent ban on Moscow Pride since 2006 to be illegal.

The Strasbourg ruling is a particular victory for Nikolai Alekseev, who has faced years of false arrests, imprisonment and violence for his steadfast determination to hold a pride celebration in the capital. The disgraced former mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov is primarily responsible for the annual ban, but successive Russian presidents Putin and Medvedev also share responsibility as they did not over-rule him.

Peter Tatchell, who attends Moscow Pride and was severely beaten by homophobic thugs two and a half years ago, said, “This is an astonishing victory. Nikolai and his small band of daring LGBT activists have taken on the might of the Russian state - and won.
“It is a triumph for LGBT Russians and for all Russians who love liberty. This ruling expands the democratic space and gives comfort to human rights defenders everywhere. It’s a positive result for gay rights and liberty, and a setback for autocracy and homophobia.”

Charity night in aid of the Iraqi LGBT

The first ever charity night in aid of the Iraqi LGBT is to take place this month. This celebrates the fifth anniversary of the London-based initiative to raise awareness of the persecution of LGBT people in Iraq.

Over 720 Gay, Lesbian, Trans and Bisexual people have been recently killed by the militia and members of the Ministry of Interior forces and death squads targeting all sexual minorities inside Iraq.

The event will take place at Apres London – one of London’s leading clubs and will see performances by some of London’s leading Drag Queens. A raffle and auction prizes will also be offered.

Julian Bennett will be hosting the night : "I am very proud to have been asked to host this event. I think it is so important that we do as much as we can to support this charity and what it stands for. I can’t believe the Iraqi government are trying to implement this law when we live in the 21st century where most people’s views are so liberal and open!! Please come and support us all at the event."

Participants attacked at third European Transgender Council

Two Turkish delegates to the Third European Transgender Council in Malmoe, Sweden, were attacked as they left a restaurant Sept. 30.

They were physically assaulted and pelted with eggs by five to seven attackers, they said. They also were allegedly later mistreated by police, who asked them offensive questions, questioned their right to be in Sweden and referred to them with incorrect pronouns. The police interrogations made them feel "intensely violated and humiliated," the activists said.

The conference brought together more than 200 trans activists from 35 nations.

Training: Supporting Young Gay & Bisexual Men

A training course for promoting awareness of and equality for young gay and bisexual men is being run in Manchester by ‘LGBT Youth North West’, on the 25th October 2010. LGBT History Month HE Officer Jeff Evans said, "Such training events clearly offer a wonderful opportunity to better appreciate, protect and help challenge the endemic bigotry faced by young males in our schools, colleges and wider community".

EHRC Report Reveals extent of Homophobia in schools

The much publicised Equalities and Human Rights Commission’s latest report How Fair is Britain? reveals that LGBT young people still face “unfair treatment and bullying in the education system.” and that “Education-related inequalities have an impact over the life-span, not just in childhood”.

The report, released on Monday the 11th of October, states that two-thirds of lesbian, gay and bisexual students are being bullied. It acknowledged that there is a difficulty in measuring trans pupil bullying levels currently. It acknowledges that, “The experience of school life can be traumatic for some”. It adds that, “It appears that those who are bullied are more likely to be outside of education, employment or training at 16 years of age”.

Schools OUT co-chair Tony Fenwick said: “I wish I could describe this report as revealing shocking statistics, but the reality is that any LGBT person in the land and anyone who works in our schools is perfectly aware that this is the case and the EHRC’s findings will surprise no one”.

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) findings follow the TSN/TES Report on homophobic bullying, which revealed that it was rife in 2006. The Stonewall School Report revealed that it was rife and largely unchallenged in 2007. The NUT Prevalence of Homophobia Surveys, started in 2008 and ongoing, which can be found on the Schools OUT website, show that homophobic bullying is endemic. GIRES research reveals that transphobic bullying is also endemic and that it is reported less because trans pupils are relatively rare. However there is thought to be at least one trans pupil in every 100 in our schools.

Fellow Schools OUT co-chair Sue Sanders added: “With this essential information from an independent body we have more tools – as if we need them – to persuade the nay-sayers and deniers everywhere that we are failing our LGBT children and that this failure reduces their life chances and their potential contribution to our society and the economy.

“With this and the fact that ten LGBT pupils in the USA have killed themselves in the first month of the autumn term, we surely have more evidence than anyone needs to say that this is the time to take on the challenge and eradicate homophobia in our schools.”

European Prides Diary: 9th Slovak LGBT Film Festival 2

Clare Dimyon MBE is doing a travelogue of her latest European tour. Here is an account of her travels in Slovokia. Previous entries can be found here.

30 Sept 2010: Slovak LGBT Film Festival – you could feel proud or very humble indeed

After a lazy morning catching up on some zeds at Pension NOVA, Bratislava’s first gay hotel a ten minute tram ride takes me to the centre where LGBT are already gathering. Sure enough, a rainbow flag has gone up, hanging over the balcony at the front of VSMU, the Faculty of Music & Arts. The lobby is full and I greet old friends from 2009 and newer friends from Dúhový PRIDE last May. I feel totally at home in a recognisably LGBT environment with recognisable “types” chatting away in Slovak. I am left reflecting on the universality of our “tribe” and the universality of our experience within our different national and ethnic groups.

In C&E Europe, film festivals are a classic vehicle for LGBT gatherings even before PRIDE, the darkened rooms providing an ideal privacy for those who are not yet confident enough to be “out” even with other LGBT people. Just like Budapest PRIDE the Slovak Film Festival is an embarrassment of riches of films from around the world. The screen is arranged with a blank space at the bottom, this is for the Slovak sub-titles, separately projected often under the English sub-titles embedded in the film. I meet any number of C&E Europeans whose English is almost flawless, barely accented but there are plenty whose English is halting and plenty whose English is non-existent. Herein lies a burden unknown to LGBT in the English speaking world, the patient translation line by line of the script. In the corner is a woman hunched over a laptop, explaining that this is the film scheduled for tomorrow night, which only arrived yesterday! Another runs up to me and rather excitedly explains she translated me in my tiny walk on part in Beyond Gay, which will be screened tomorrow. Another woman laughs as she explains that she struggled to catch the Slovak sub-titles up with the film because there were differences in script between the version that had been translated and the version that was being shown so that it was completely out of sync. All the translation, all the additional work in projecting the sub-titles is voluntary effort by LGBT donating their skills and expertise to make LGBT culture accessible to LGBT compatriots who lack those languages. I could say “it makes me proud” but in fact as an English speaking lesbian, it makes me feel very humble indeed.

Best wishes

Call for Olympic Volunteers

London 2012 announces plans to recruit passionate and inspirational volunteers for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games

With almost two years to go until the London 2012 Games, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) today announces plans to recruit up to 70,000 volunteers for the London 2012 Games.

In the biggest post-war volunteer recruitment campaign in the UK’s history, LOCOG will be looking for dedicated and inspirational people representative of the diversity of London and the UK to apply for a wide variety of volunteer roles.

There are two types of Games Maker roles, specialists in areas such as medical services, sport or press operations and generalists, with roles ranging from spectator assistants, uniform distributors and ticket checking.

In addition to these volunteer roles being recruited by LOCOG, the Mayor of London will shortly announce plans for the recruitment of London Volunteers, stationed at key transport hubs, at visitor attractions, and on the streets of the capital to make sure all visitors to London get the best possible welcome during the Games.

The role of volunteers has been integral throughout Olympic history. London pioneered the use of volunteers in the 1948 Games which saw the first official use of unpaid members of the public to help with the Games.

The more LGBT volunteers, the more impact we will have.

The closing date for applications is October 27th.

For information on volunteering roles and the application process, please visit www.london2012.com/volunteering

European Prides Diary: 9th Slovak LGBT Film Festival

Clare Dimyon MBE is doing a travelogue of her latest European tour. Here is an account of her travels in Slovokia. Previous entries can be found here.

29 Sept 2010: Arrival at the 9th Slovak LGBT Film Festival

I feel great excitement as the bus from Vienna rounds the bend to reveal the classic view of the Slovak capital, the Hrad, the castle housing the parliament, and the iconic bridge of Bratislava, renamed the “Rainbow Bridge” after it formed the main route of the first ever Dúhový (rainbow) PRIDE last May. Four months later I am on my way to the 9th Slovak LGBT Film Festival, with a fabulous programme of films, plenty of films from the English speaking world films but also LGBT films from Latin America, Germany and the Netherlands as well as films from Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia including one about that Rainbow Bridge and the stunning PRIDE hosted by Slovak LGBT people and their friends and families. I get a bit lost on the trams and someone offers to help, then she recognises me and we realise we met at PRIDE!

After catching up on some sleep at the hotel the gay owner takes me to the opening ceremony, stopping en route at the gay bar he also runs and I meet the staff who are as “camp as Christmas” and while their English is halting (and my Slovak is worse!) it is astonishing to reflect that we are very identifiably one people something I have noticed across Central & Eastern Europe from Moldova to Macedonia. I feel very relieved for them that they have a gay employer and some financial independence so that they can be themselves. The hotel owner tells me, again in halting English, that his whole family know and indeed we have a drink with his uncle and brother-in-law. He says it’s been easier since he had the hotel, he is becoming well know in his neighbourhood for his excellent lunches and people are positively sending their clients to the gay hotel for lunch. It’s hard not to feel rather proud of this gay business, which is reaching out to his neighbours and generating positive acceptance for LGBT people. He says he can’t afford it yet but he’d like to have flags outside the hotel, the national flags as usual but also including the rainbow flag.

At the opening ceremony of the Slovak LGBT Film Festival, there are rainbow flags a plenty and a photographic exhibition and we are treated first to an amazing latin dance routine and then some speeches including a very impressive speech from the Dutch ambassador, who explains that her sponsorship of the festival is in keeping with the Dutch government’s promotion of the human rights of LGBT people and mentions that Dúhový PRIDE Bratislava was her first experience of getting tear gas in her eyes. The Slovak LGBT Film Festival is not only supported by the US, Dutch Irish and Nordic countries but also by the Hungarian Institute of Culture and by the Slovak Ministry of Culture who declare that they are proud to “support initiatives aimed at preventing discrimination in Slovak society, that contribute to the integration of LGBT people and to challenge myths and stereotyped views about them.” All this is a great tribute to what has already been achieved by Slovak LGBT and I wonder if it is possible to feel prouder.
