No Same-Sex marriage Yet in California

Hopes that Californian same-sex couples could tie the knot from this week were dashed on Tuesday when the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld proposition 8, which states that marriage must be between a man and a woman.

Activists were disappointed but not surprised by the three-judge ruling, aware that it’s going to be a battle every step of the way.

The good news for Californians is that an appeal against Prop 8 is set for December 6th.

Charity Commission Denies Charity the Right to Discriminate

A Roman Catholic adoption charity's appeal to be allowed to discriminate against gay people wanting it to place children with them has been rejected.

Catholic Care wanted exemption from new anti-discrimination laws so it could limit services provided to homosexual couples on religious grounds.

The Charity Commission said gay people were suitable parents and religious views did not justify discrimination.

The Leeds-based charity said it was "very disappointed". But Celia Gardiner, of the Roman Catholic Caucus of the Lesbian and gay Christian movement was "delighted" at the news, adding that the proposed amendment offended many catholics.

Catholic Care - which had been placing children with adoptive parents for more than 100 years - was among a dozen Catholic agencies in England and Wales forced to change their policy towards homosexual people by the equality laws passed in 2007.

Same-Sex Marriage in California to Resume August 18

Same-sex marriages in California are set to resume next week after a federal judge deemed Proposition 8, which declared marriage must be between a man and a woman, to be 'unconstitutional'. On August 4, 2010, federal judge Vaughn R. Walker declared the ban unconstitutional temporarily stayed his ruling. On August 6, 2010, both sides submitted legal briefs to Judge Walker arguing for or against a long-term stay of the ruling. On August 12, 2010, Judge Walker lifted the stay. Barring intervention by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court of the United States, same-sex marriages will be allowed to resume in California on August 18, 2010 at 5:00PM PDT (19-08-10 1AM BST).

New Service to Report Trans Hate Crime

The Home Office has awarded GIRES a grant to fund a national system for reporting transphobic crime. Appended below are examples of the crimes that trans people have experienced. It appears that only a few victims of such crime report it to the police. One young trans person we know has experienced 60 criminal incidents in the past six months, which include being beaten up and a death threat. Yet she hopes by suffering all this persecution with dignity she will teach the perpetrators to behave better without involving the police. There are other reasons for not involving the police: the fear of being outed in Court; the lack of confidence that the police will deal sensitively and properly with the incident. Yet we know from our work with police forces throughout the UK that many are fully aware of the needs of trans people and very keen to support them.

TCrime.net enables crimes to be reported confidentially and leaves it the individual to decide what information should be passed on to the police.

Rugby Union Star Supports Gay Sports day

England rugby union star and gay icon Ben Cohen has given his support to this year's Gay Sports Day.

The day, organised by GMFA, the gay men’s health charity, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, will be held in London on August 30th.

Tatchell to Meet Olympic Authorites

Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell is to meet the organisers of the London 2012 Olympics next week to urge them to promote London's diverse communities.

He said he hoped the games would include human rights-themed events and ensure that minorities are visible during ceremonies.

Mr Tatchell said he was meeting Stephen Frost, the head of diversity and inclusion, and Ruth Mackenzie, director of the Cultural Olympiad.

He added that he hopes to meet head of ceremonies Martin Green later this month.

He said: "It is not enough to have black, female and gay staff and volunteers, or to include them in the Olympic ceremonials.

"London's diverse communities should be an identifiable, visible highlight of the opening and closing Ceremonies.
