After the recent passing of Portuguese "cross-dresser" Maria Teresinha, commonly known as "the general," the Guardian published an article recounting his life. Living as a man since 1974, the general was put on trial in 1992 and effectively opened up discussion about homosexuality, cross-dressing and transsexuality in Portugal.
