Downing Street Reception for LGBT History Month

NOTE: Due to the demise of David Cameron's son, Ivan, this event was cancelled and will now be taking place on Thursday 5 March.

The Prime Minister has invited Schools OUT and LGBT History Month co-chairs, Sue Sanders and Tony Fenwick, to 10 Downing Street this evening. The occasion is to celebrate LGBT History Month. It is an important endorsement of the work and achievements made by the Month in the 5 years since it came into being.

The reception will also include Harriet Harman and Michael Cashman.

"This is a fantastic moment for the LGBT community; we really are on the threshold of something big," according to Tony. "Who would have thought five years ago that a group wanting to put lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans people into the National Curriculum would be welcomed by the Prime Minister of our nation?"

In what proves to be a busy day, Tony also appeared on BBC1's Breakfast TV as part of a report on education and LGBT people tomorrow. Katie Ivens, Vice-Chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, also featured in the debate. The programme aired at 7.20am.

Finally, viewers in London will also see LGBT History Month featured on BBC1's Inside Out at 7pm tonight.

Top 1960's US Presidential Aid Was Probed for Homosexuality by FBI

When Beltway insider Jack Valenti died two years ago at age 85, he was playing the role of intermediary between Washington and Hollywood as the theatrical, snowy-haired president of the Motion Picture Association of America.

But back in 1964, Valenti was a Houston ad executive newly installed at the White House as a top aide to President Lyndon B. Johnson. And J. Edgar Hoover's FBI found itself quietly consumed with the vexing question of whether Valenti was gay.

Milk Wins Two Oscars

Milk, the biopic of gay activist Harvey Milk, directed by Gus Van Sant, won two Oscars last night during the 81st award ceremony. Sean Penn walked away with the award for best actor while Dustin Lance Black received a statuette for best original writing.

Commenting on his victory, Dustin Lance Black said:
"If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he'd want me to say to all those gay and lesbian kids out there tonight - who have been told that they are less than by their churches, by the government, or by their families - that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures that are valued."

Dustin Lance Black also thanked his mother for her acceptance of his sexuality, and promised homosexual young men and women that, "very soon you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours."

Sean Penn said:
"Thank you. Thank you. You commie, homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me often."

"For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support. We've got to have equal rights for everyone."

The film has already garnered another 26 wins & 44 nominations since its release in October last year.

Spotlight: Living Library

A Living-Library-style event will aim to challenge prejudices and stereotypes of those who may have never met a gay man or transgender person and therefore hold on to the view they developed on basis of media and heteronormative society.

This is based on the theory that people are more likely to hold on to their prejudices if they do not know anyone who represents diversity strand in subject of prejudice or stereotype.

The Event is organised in partnership between Brent Youth Service's Mosaic LGBT Youth Centre, Willesden Library and Brent Diversity Team.

New York's Oldest Gay Bookstore to Close

New York City's only remaining gay and lesbian bookstore says it's closing after 41 years.

Oscar Wilde Bookshop owner Kim Brinster says "tough times" are the reason for the Manhattan store's closing on March 29. She says the city once supported three gay and lesbian bookstores.

Pride London Appeals for Ambassadors

The organisers of the UK's largest Pride event want to hear your experiences.

Pride London was attended by more than 800,000 people on July 5th last year. The parade was led by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. The event dates back to the 1970s, when it was a more explicitly political event.

Pride London organisers want people whose lives have been changed by Pride events to act as ambassadors for Pride London 2009.

"We would love to hear from those who took part in Pride prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality," Pride organisers said. "Maybe your first Pride London Parade helped you to realise it was OK to be gay, perhaps you and your partner met at Pride?

"Whatever your story we are looking for volunteers to be involved in some of our media work leading up to Pride '09 and we would love to hear from you."

Anyone who would like to take part should visit www.pridelondon.org

London is to host World Pride in 2012, just weeks before the city's Olympic Games.

Spotlight: Kent Police Launch LGBT Schools Competition

Kent police is asking children to write an essay as part of a month-long celebration of “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History”. The county force, recently recognised as one of 'the most gay friendly employers in Britain", has a series of events throughout February.

Events include exhibitions, a quiz, a “celebration dinner dance” and the competition which includes an under-14s category. Youngsters are asked to write an essay explaining what this month’s slogan “All different, same respect” means to them.
It also has a 15 to 17 category and an 18-plus section with the winners receiving a £25 book token and a Kent police shield.

Spotlight: Imaan Fundraiser and Screening of 'A Jihad for Love'

To mark Valentine's Day and to raise fund for its work, Imaan, the UK's support group of LGBT Muslims, their families and friends, is screening the documentary A Jihad for Love.

Filmed over 5 1/2 years, in 12 countries and 9 languages, "A Jihad for Love" comes from the heart of Islam. Looking beyond a hostile and war-torn present, this film seeks to reclaim the Islamic concept of a greater Jihad, which can mean 'an inner struggle' or 'to strive in the path of God'. In doing so the film and its remarkable subjects move beyond the narrow concept of 'Jihad' as holy war. Muslim gay filmmaker Parvez Sharma travels the many worlds of this dynamic faith discovering the stories of its most unlikely storytellers: lesbian and gay Muslims.

Cleve Jones, Still Recruiting

Gay rights activist Cleve Jones, who is portrayed in the movie "Milk," spoke at UC Berkeley last Thursday, urging the younger generation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to continue the fight for equality that Jones' friend and mentor, Harvey Milk, began more than 30 years ago.

"In 1972, when I came to San Francisco, if someone had told me that I would be fighting for the right to get married or join the Army in 2009, I think I would have started dating women," said the 54-year-old Jones, jokingly.

Jones, the founder of the AIDS quilt, the world's largest community arts project that now contains more than 40,000 panels dedicated to people who have died from the disease, and the co-founder of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, was equally comedic and serious during a 90-minute talk and question-and-answer session for several hundred students and community members Thursday.

Spotlight: Police Stations Fly the Rainbow Flag for the Month

North Wales Police have shown their solidarity and support for LGBT History Month 2009 by flying the rainbow flag above their HQ.

Read the story on the News Wales website here.

In the meantime, the Limehouse Station in east London also tried to flly the flag but have been told by newly appointed Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service to take the flag down and replace it by the usual Union Flag.

Read the story on the Daily Mail website here. Some of the comments at the end of this article are a good example of why the Month is very much needed.

A similar decision to fly the rainbow flag in two Suffolk stations has also be criticised by 2 MPs. Read the story on the Fenland Citizen website here.

Classified: The Secret History of the Personal Column by HG Cocks

[...] in 1915, while other men fought the battles of Loos and Ypres, a comic novelist called Alfred Barrett, the former editor of Family Circle, spotted a gap in the market for a new magazine. He called it Link, and advertised it as “the only monthly practically devoted to love interests”.

[...] The police were particularly interested in the number of young men who claimed to be artistic, musical, unconventional, or fans of Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman. Officers also had their doubts about women who claimed to be “jolly” or “sporty”, thinking this might be a euphemism for what might now be called “up for it”.
